Back in 2016 I created a scoring and ranking system called the GOAT Index, the first scoring system to weight regular season and playoff performance to come up with a holistic score to represent each players performance. I compile an All Time ranking at the end of each season. To qualify for the index, players must have played at least 10 seasons or more. Unfortunately, metrics like blocks, steals and turnovers were not officially recognized and recorded by the NBA and ABA leagues until the early 70s. This means that 50s and 60s legends like Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, John Havlicek and Jerry West will be excluded from this analysis, as no record of their performance in these areas exists (just so you know, this was a HUGE pain point for me, especially in the case of Wilt Chamberlain, as anyone who knows basketball history knows Wilt was a monster: a double double machine who set some amazing records in the NBA. But unfortunately, and as painful as it was, I could not include him and other amazing old school players in the analysis for the reason cited above).
Below are the top 10 players from the GOAT Index rankings for the best All Stars as of the 2017/2018 season based on the 10 best players I selected at each position.
- Hakeem Olajuwon ranked 1st when looking at both regular season and playoff performance (Total GTS). David Robinson ranked 2nd, Michael Jordan ranked 3rd, LeBron James ranked 4th and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ranked 5th.
